Show Information

Ain't Misbehavin' tickets put you right in the middle of a high-voltage celebration of classic American jazz and Harlem Renaissance showmanship. Ain't Misbehavin' is a musical revue built around the songs of Fats Waller and the era’s nightlife energy—swinging, bluesy, witty, and full of personality. It premiered on May 9, 1978, at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway in New York City, with direction by Richard Maltby Jr. and a book by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby Jr.

Instead of a traditional, linear plot, the show thrives on shifting moods—comic, romantic, bawdy, and heartbreakingly bluesy—to evoke nightclub performance and the breadth of the sound associated with the 1920s–1930s. The score draws from a song catalogue led by Waller, including songs written with collaborators such as Andy Razaf and Harry Brooks, bringing stride piano–driven rhythms and jazz-standard sparkle to the stage.

After its Broadway opening, the original run closed on February 21, 1982. While the Broadway production has closed, Ain't Misbehavin' has remained a staple repertory revue—frequently revived and licensed for regional productions that keep its jazzy cabaret spirit alive for new audiences.

The show’s legacy includes major Broadway recognition—Ain't Misbehavin' won the Tony Award for Best Musical (1978)—and it’s widely regarded as a high-energy, joyful revue that celebrates the sophistication, humor, and sensuality of Harlem Renaissance songwriting and performance style. Story Summary

Set in a stylized frame that evokes Harlem nightlife and performance culture of the 1920s–1930s, Ain't Misbehavin' is a song-driven revue rather than a traditional story musical. The “characters” are typically an ensemble of performers—often five singers plus an onstage pianist—who guide you through the era’s sound with shifting scenes and moods.

What makes the show hit so hard onstage is its compact, club-ready theatrical style: singer-actor-dancers deliver comedic patter, intimate blues moments, and synchronized ensemble numbers that honor jazz-club showmanship. The momentum depends on tight vocal blend, rhythmic precision, and charismatic direct address—often supported by period-inflected costumes and nightclub staging that keep the vibe immediate and alive.
