Team Information

The Southern Illinois Salukis Basketball schedule is your guide to one of the Missouri Valley Conference’s toughest, most tradition-rich programs. Southern Illinois competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and represents Southern Illinois University Carbondale in Carbondale, Illinois. Known for maroon and white pride, the Salukis bring a brand of basketball that’s often been defined by defense, physical play, and a fan base that shows up ready to make a difference. And with Grey Dawg helping set the tone, game night on campus feels like a full-on MVC event.

Southern Illinois has a résumé that stacks up in postseason moments and big-stage success. The Salukis have made 8 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by a Sweet Sixteen run in 2007. That 2006–07 season also included an MVC regular-season championship under head coach Chris Lowery, a run that still stands as a defining era for the program. SIU also owns two NIT championships (1943, 1967) and captured an NCAA Division II national championship in 1977 during the program’s pre–Division I era. When you follow the Salukis, you’re following a program that’s proven it can win—both in conference races and in postseason pressure.

The Salukis’ history includes names that college basketball fans recognize instantly. Walt Frazier is the program’s most famous alumnus—he’s a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer who led SIU to the 1967 NIT title. Doug Collins, a star guard in the early 1970s, went on to a long career as an NBA player, coach, executive, and broadcaster. The 2007 Sweet Sixteen team featured key contributors like A.J. Guyton and Darren Brooks, and legendary coach Jack Hartman guided SIU to the 1977 NCAA Division II national championship.

Home games are played at the Banterra Center, a true college-basketball environment built for noise and momentum swings. Opened in 1964 with a capacity of 8,000, it’s an on-campus arena that can feel especially loud and personal when the Salukis are rolling. MVC basketball is at its best in intimate buildings—where every stop matters and every run hits harder—and Banterra Center fits that mold.

Rivalries add extra juice to the schedule, especially when conference standings are on the line. In-state games against Illinois State carry regional pride, while matchups with Bradley bring long-running MVC familiarity and geographic edge. The Salukis also have competitive MVC series with Northern Iowa and Missouri State, games that have often mattered in tournament races and late-season positioning. When those opponents show up in Carbondale, the intensity tends to rise fast.
