Iconic Band

Few ensembles in chamber music have left as indelible a mark as the Alexander String Quartet — and if you’re tracking the Alexander String Quartet schedule, you’ll see their presence across major festivals and concert series. Formed in 1981 in New York and based in San Francisco since 1989, the quartet quickly earned international recognition for insightful interpretations and a warm, expressive sound. Founding members Paul Yarbrough (viola) and Sandy Wilson (cello) helped establish the group’s artistic identity from the start, leading to performances in major music capitals on five continents. Their acclaimed recordings span core repertoire from Beethoven and Shostakovich to Brahms and beyond.

Celebrated for technical precision and deep ensemble unity, the Alexander String Quartet has become a pillar of the chamber music landscape. Their influence extends across generations through acclaimed performances, recordings, and educational outreach, including longstanding residency work in San Francisco. Listeners praise their dynamic range and commitment to both classical and modern repertoire — a balance that defines their legacy.

Current Band Members

• Zakarias Grafilo — Violin

Joined the quartet in 2002, bringing seasoned artistry from prior chamber ensemble work. He’s recognized for polished solo and ensemble playing that complements the group’s cohesive sound.

• Frederick Lifsitz — Violin

A member since 1987, Lifsitz has performed with orchestras and chamber groups while shaping the quartet’s artistic direction. His refined tone and leadership are central to the ensemble’s approach.

• Paul Yarbrough — Viola

A founding member since 1981, Yarbrough is a core part of the quartet’s identity. His long-standing dedication to chamber music anchors the group’s balance and depth.

• Sandy Wilson — Cello

Also a founding member since 1981, Wilson is known for extensive chamber music work and as a teacher. His rich, grounded cello voice is integral to the quartet’s signature blend.

Former and Legacy Members

• David Samuel — Viola (2012–2023)

Samuel contributed to numerous recordings and international performances over more than a decade, helping sustain the quartet’s high artistic standards.

Across their catalog, the Alexander String Quartet champions cornerstone works that showcase both emotional depth and intellectual rigor. Notable highlights include Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131; Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110; Mozart’s Quartet in D minor, K. 421; Brahms’s String Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 51; and Dvořák’s “American” Quartet, Op. 96. Their discography reflects a devotion to the repertoire’s great masters alongside collaborations and 20th-century gems.

In concert, the quartet focuses on musical conversation — every phrase feels purposeful, every gesture essential. Expect intimate audience engagement, thoughtful program notes or commentary, and performances that favor clarity and expression over theatrical staging. It’s chamber music at its most compelling: close-up, eloquent, and profoundly human.
